As we quickly approach Spring Break time we wanted to make you aware of the current outbreak of a new type of “dog flu” affecting pets across the country, even as close as Marion. This highly contagious and, for some dogs, potentially serious respiratory infection is caused by canine influenza virus (CIV) H3N2 or H3N8.
Chances are, if your dog is exposed to either CIV H3N2 or H3N8, he or she may become infected. Dogs that are frequently in contact with other dogs may be at high risk of infection with canine influenza. This includes dogs that are boarded, enrolled in day care, or often visit the local dog park. Below are some news links that show how this influenza can affect your pet.
The good news is that our office now has a vaccine available to help control disease associated with Canine Influenza. In an effort to be proactive, we now have the vaccine in and are strongly recommending that you come in to get your dog vaccinated. To allow us to protect your pet in a manner that is convenient for you, we will be holding multiple vaccine clinics to get your dogs vaccinated for Canine Influenza. These will take place at The Range Pet Lodge, 1045 N Rangeline Rd, Carmel, IN 46032. There are multiple dates and times are listed below. Please contact us to schedule your appointment or click here to reserve online.
Initial vaccine clinic dates:
- Wednesday, February 24th – 5:00pm – 7:00pm
- Saturday, February 27th – 9:00am – 11:00am and 1:00pm – 3:00pm
- Thursday, March 3rd – 5:00pm – 7:00pm
- Saturday, March 5th – 9:00am – 11:00am and 1:00pm – 3:00pm
For maximum protection against these strains of CIV there is a second booster that needs to take place three weeks after the first injection. Dates for the booster vaccine clinic times will be available at the initial clinics and will also be emailed later. You will have the option of getting your dogs protected against both the H3N2 and the H3N8 strain for $70 or only the most recent strain of CIV for $50. Cash or Credit is to be paid on the first visit and will cover both injections. No examinations will be done at the time of the clinic.
The Zoetis Companion Animal Immunization Support Guarantee applies to any dog that is appropriately vaccinated for CIV and received Canine Influenza Vaccine, H3N2, Killed Virus* or Vanguard® CIV for the final vaccine. The guarantee provides coverage for 12 months and takes effect 2 weeks after the primary vaccination series is completed or at the time of annual booster vaccination. The support guarantee covers diagnostics to establish whether a pet vaccinated with one of the Zoetis vaccine antigens has contracted the corresponding disease.
Please contact your local veterinarian with any questions you may have around Canine Influenza, or feel free to use our convenient vaccine clinics above and get protected from CIV H3N2 or H3N8.
